Unique wreck diving in Chuuk Lagoon (Truk Lagoon) Micronesia
If you want to do a special dive trip, I can recommend awesome wreck diving in Chuuk Lagoon. Also known as the biggest graveyard of ships in the world.
There you will find wrecks which are easy to dive. These protected and beautifully coral encrusted wrecks are not only for wreck diving lovers. But also for divers who otherwise would not pay attention to wrecks.
The wrecks also attract a diverse array of marine life like turtles, sharks and manta rays. The shipwrecks and remains of Chuuk Lagoon are sometimes referred to as the “Ghost Fleet of Truk Lagoon”.
Lagoon of Chuuk Truk Lagoon
The famous WWII wrecks lie in the sheltered tropical lagoon of Chuuk. The wrecks can be well dived all year round, there are almost no currents.
Chuuk Lagoon Memorial
The whole area has been declared a memorial and it is forbidden to remove items from the wrecks. Tropical waters have transformed the sunken warships into a colorful underwater world for many years.
History
Due to the protected lagoon this is an ideal natural harbor. The Japanese set up their largest naval base in the Pacific during World War II. In 1944, the Japanese were attacked by the Americans. In this operation Hailstone, the Japanese fleet was almost completely destroyed by heavy air attacks. The attack was 15 times stronger than the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Over 60 warships, transport ships and many aircrafts were sunk within 2 days. It is a unique underwater museum with tanks, trucks, planes, mines and bombs. Furthermore, machine guns, periscopes, torpedoes and more.
Easy to dive
It is a relatively easy dive site as most of the wrecks lie at a depth of 15 to 30 meters. From the surface of the water you can already see the superstructures of the ships.
Best travel time
The most ideal travel time is from January to April. You can travel the most commonly used route via Manila and Guam to Truk Lagoon. It is best to connect this diving area with the nearby islands of Palau and Yap. Please check with your local travel agent.
